Ash Wednesday Altar The Altar at St Cross, near Winchester. Taken on Ash Wednesday, 6th February 2008, hence the purple drapes and the Order of Service you can see in the foreground. Drapes and vestments are purple, according to the - Liturgical Colours - used by the Anglican Church. Purple - (which may vary from 'Roman purple' to violet, with blue as an alternative) is the colour for Advent and from Ash Wednesday until the day before Palm Sunday. It is recommended for Funerals and for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, although either black or white may be preferred. A Lent array of unbleached linen is sometimes used as an alternative to purple, but only from Ash Wednesdayuntil the day before Palm Sunday. Rose-colour is sometimes used as an alternative on the Third Sunday of Advent and the Fourth Sunday of Lent. SEPTEMBER 30 2007 WILDCAT LYNX, HOWLETTS ZOO, ENGLAND You ensnare me in your man made traps and liberate me for selfish gain from the natural habitat that I call my home. In exchange for a long haul flight in the baggage hold, you offer me the paultry prize of a barbed wire fenced cage and expect me to pose for your jeering crowds, your finger pointing audience, your sea of empty faces who pass me by in search of the Tigress they really came in search of. And you want me to smile? Which part of my constant pacing movements do you fail to comprehend? Which part of 'Let me be free', do you not understand? This magnificent specimen was, I feel quite understandably prowling the spacious confines of his cage at Howlettes Zoo, looking somewhat down in the mouth and peeved with life in general. Finally he crouched on a tall branch and gave me the oppportunity to get a good look at his beautiful coat, and snap this with a Nikkor 55-200mm lens fitted to the Nikon D80 DSLR, and a Skylight 1A filter. I'm in two minds about such beatiful animals being caged up for the delectation of the masses, even if it is one of the few ways to ensure thier species survival in our overly cruel world.

:: A week in the Lakes - Day 1 (Sunday) ::

Normally, I try to show you what I think is a "good" photo (yes, it may not seem like it, but I do like to think I have tried to make the effort!). However, for the next 7 days, I'll be showing a photo a day from my past week in the Lake District. They may have no great photographic skill but hopefully you can share my week with me in spirit, at least. This is last Sunday. We had a rented cottage very close to the centre of Grasmere, one of my favourite villages (but alas, also very popular with thousands of tourists!). It provides a cracking base for walks and one of them is the steep climb up to Helm Crag (aslso known as the "Lion and the Lamb" due to the appearance of the rock formation. This was taken with light rain in the air hence the murky conditions. An hour or so later, on my descent into Greenburn, it started to rain hard and kept raining for the rest of the afternoon and evening. This is seen looking more or less south across the village to the the mere of Grasmere with the hump of Loughrigg Fell, beyond, almost lost in the murk. The great walker Alfred Wainwright who produced a series of 7 handwritten books over 13 years to mark the Lakeland fells and hills never got to stand where I was standing as he never made it the rocky pinnacle on top of Helm Crag itself.

The third stop on the Mersey Fery Triangle is Birkenhead, there has been a ferry between Liverpool and Birkenhead since 1332, when the monks of Birkenhead Priory were granted a charter that enabled them to charge for carrying passengers from Birkenhead to Liverpool but strangley not in the reverse direction. The current landing stage dates from 1984 when the original victorian stage was replaced. The bell tower was transferred from the original stage. The tower in the background is the ventilation shaft for the Queensway tunnel and mirrors the Georges Dock building ventilation tower in Liverpool.

Until last year it was a working factory. Unfortunately, this part of town, though picturesque, doesn't get a lot of investment in renewal. The city was formed by an amalgamation of three towns in the mid-1970s. To this day, the largest city of the three gets the lion's share of the cash, while the second-largest gets the bulk of what's left over. Our little town is only ever an afterthought.

I decided to take my Hoya R72 infrared filter out for a try today. The Live-View on my Olympus E-3 worked brilliantly for focusing with it (since you can't see through the optical viewfinder with an IR filter attached). The swivel-out screen also made shooting form in the grass much easier! For my first time seroiusly trying the Infrared Filter I was quite happy with some of the results. I found I had to do a lot of bracketting and then select the best ones after doing a bit of post processing.

Sanctuario 7of 7 - the last of this series The patchwork of fields, as seen from the edge of the garden at the back of the church. Some distance out of Albox (Almeria, Spain), up winding mountain roads offering great views, you come up the "Sanctuario de Saliente" perched on top of a hill. A former monastry it is now a quiet hotel with restaurant attached. It still has an active church "Virgen del Saliente", used by the local population and very popular for weddings. The panoramic views from here are amazing, showing a patchwork of agriculture - olives, almonds and other things.
